Defence of the Realm – Royal Air Force

The Royal Air Force

For over 200 years the Army and Navy constituted the two main arms of Britain’s defence. Then in 1903 the Wright Brothers made the first powered flight and true aviation was born. At first military aviation was under the Army and Navy with their own aviation services – the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. Then on April 1st 1918 Britain became the first nation to form an independent air arm – the Royal Air Force.
