The Royal Navy has dispatched the Type-23 frigate HMS Richmond to the Mediterranean as part of an effort to target people smuggling rings from North Africa to Europe. The warship which is currently transiting the Suez Canal carries a Lynx helicopter and a Scan Eagle Unmanned Aerial Vehicle which will be used to sweep vast areas of ocean with their sensor suites in search of boats that the smugglers are using to transport large numbers of migrants many of which are totally unsuitable of the task.

The primary mission of HMS Richmond, as part of a wider EU naval operation which includes HMS Enterprise, will be to target the boats operated by the smugglers themselves and carries a contingent of Royal Marines to carry out boardings. Although the frigate is not ideally suited for the task Richmond will be given a search and rescue role as well during the two month deployment expected to begin in October.
