Royal Air Force (RAF) Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, who is the Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff, met with Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Lt-Gen Igor Makushev, on Wednesday. The meeting was at the request of the British government and was intended to discuss the establishing of some form of communication service between the Russian and British armed forces.
This has been the source of much frustration for the British in the past as Russian aircraft have repeatedly flown close to the UK’s extremely congested airspace without answering radio calls or using radio transponders. With both nations now engaged in combat operations over Syria the need for effective communication is now more pressing than ever.
A Russian press release stated;
The two sides looked at the ways of establishing operational communications between the relevant outlets of the Russian and British Armed Forces for prevention of incidents on high seas and in the airspace.
On a lighter note the Russian and British officials also exchanged opinions on the possibility of conducting joint celebrations of memorial dates of the 75th anniversary of the Arctic Convoys next year.
