They should be in the sky!

If only. There is a privately operated one flying in the states

There is indeed. I believe he was trying to bring it to the UK but low and behold, red tape prevented it.

It’s a shame but kind of understand why the CAA is so skittish about private fast jets. You also have to remember it is effectively still a warplane

As sad as it is you are right. The CAA have to be sure everything flying in British airspace is of a high standard and up to the job; especially those at airshows / public places.

I know that getting the Sea Vixen in the air was a nightmare as far as the CAA were concerned. With that the worry was the hydraulics.

I think it’ll be the same with the Lanc ‘Just Jane’. The CAA criteria is so strong there are (rumours) doubts it’ll ever fly whist in private ownership. Now that would be a real shame.

Absolutely it would. Bureaucracy is trying desperately to destroy our technological heritage. They’ve tried more than once to ban steam locomotives on the mainline but haven’t yet managed to produce a logical argument (thankfully )

It’s got to be a balance between ensuring safety and allowing our heritage to survive. It seems these days it’s going too much one way! Steam trains are our heritage as are old cars and these old aircraft.

The trouble is when you try to argue for heritage transport you are often labelled reckless. This ignores the dedication and commitment these groups put to these projects. I would argue that groups like Vulcan to the Sky were more safety conscious regarding XH558 than most airlines these days

Very true Tony. These groups tend to be extra cautious to protect them selves, the public and the aircraft! They have tighter guidelines I suspect than the airlines.

Unlike the airlines they are not driven by profit – BIG difference. I remember reading in Fly Past once about a project to restore a Sea Vixen (I don’t remember which one exactly) and the project leader said, “How do you make a lot of money with a heritage project like this? You start with a hell of a lot of money.” No profit just love.

So true. Just look at the current projects/ mosquito, typhoon, tornado, Canberra etc. all desperate to raise money to make the project work. It’s a long slog and always uphill with a strong wind in front of you.

I am personally excited by Yeovilton’s project to rebuild a Barracuda

Not heard of that one. Sounds exciting, be good to see that flying (or static).

I’m pretty sure it will be static. I will send you a link on twitter

Back when the Sea Harriers were in service I watched a very interesting vertical takeoff/hover demonstration by one from Ark Royal/ 801 Squadron. I was perhaps 75 metres away and the noise still had to be heard to be believed. The Harrier was an awesome aircraft….and still is…

It will be remembered with the Spitfire, Hurricane, Mustang, B17 and F4 as one of the greatest aircraft ever

And one of the noisiest! It was a truly awesome aircraft – as, indeed, were the others.
